Travis Coates (Tommy Kirk) is a young boy who has been put in charge of his family farm, mother, and younger brother while their father is away. One day, a yellow mutt shows up on their doorstep. Although Travis is resistant to it, the family takes in the dog. They name it Old Yeller. Over time, Travis and his family get into trouble with snakes and other wild creatures and Old Yeller saves them every time. Travis grows closer and closer to the dog and the two eventually become inseparable. When tragedy strikes, Old Yeller teaches Travis what it means to be responsible for the farm and his family.
