U. S. Army Captain Tom Reynolds (Frank Sinatra) is working with the O. S.S. in Burma during W. W. II, training the Kachin tribesmen in modern guerrilla warfare. Taking time from his task to get rest in India, he meets with Carla Vesari (Gina Lolabrigida), a local socialite whom he falls in love with and whose political connections help him with his mission. After returning to Burma to help lead a raid on a Japanese air base, things become more complex when he has to chase Chinese renegades across the border after they wipe out a supply convoy that was supposed to help in the original attack.
