Mi Taylor (Mickey Rooney) is a jockey down on his luck. His father had told him to go see Mr. Brown (Donald Crisp) if he ever needed a helping hand. Mi plans to steal from the Brown family, but when he meets daughter Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor) he is inspired by her childlike faith. She wins Pie, an unmanageable horse, in a town raffle and begs Mi to train the horse for the Grand National. Because the Grand National is England's most prestigious racing event, Velvet's mother (Anne Revere) fears her daughter's optimistic dreams will be dashed. But with the guidance of her mother's wisdom and the confidence of her father, they allow Velvet to pursue her dreams with Mi as her trainer because Velvet's courage teaches them all to believe.
