When Sam (John Travolta) loses his job at the museum, all he wants is for his boss Mrs. Banks (Blythe Danner) to listen to him so he can plead his case. Mrs. Banks won't listen, though, and a frustrated Sam turns to the use of force. At gunpoint, he takes everyone in the museum hostage until his demands are met. Among those hostages is TV journalist Max Brackett (Dustin Hoffman). Brackett uses his camera and microphone to give Sam a voice. Brackett, however, needs the exposure to rekindle his fading career. He manipulates the situation for his own benefit - hogging the spotlight from all other news outlets, including the network heavyweight he once embarrassed on air, Kevin Hollander (Alan Alda).
