Leopold, Duke of Albany, (Hugh Jackman), is a restless dreamer and inventor in 1876, much like others of his time like Edison he feels unfulfilled. He is also the son of a noble family, and his father tells him he must marry in to a rich american family, or he will be a disgrace to the family and they will be ruined. Meanwhile Kate (Meg Ryan) is a career woman with big dreams for her professional life and career. The two only meet when Stuart (Liev Schrieber), Kate's ex-boyfriend, having invented a way to travel in time, shows up in 1876 and Leopold ends up accidentally following him back to the present. Though they don't initially like each other he does befriend Kate's brother Charlie (Breckin Meyer). Eventually they end up involved due to Leopold helping Kate with an ad campaign for her job. As Leopold struggles to understand the present, Kate struggles to understand the past as represented by Leopold. What will become of Kate and Leopold?
