Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert), the spoiled daughter of the very rich Alexander Andrews (Walter Connolly) marries the boring, wimpy King Westley (Jameson Thomas) against her fathers wishes. Andrews, not wanting his daughter to be married to such a boring fellow, whisks Ellie away to his yacht to talk her out of the marriage. Ellie jumps off the ship to defy her father. Once back on land, Ellie gets on a bus to take her back to Westley. The person she takes a seat next to is Peter Warne (Clark Gable), an out of work newspaper reporter. Warne realizes who Ellie is and offers to help her as long as he gets the exclusive story. Ellie agrees and the adventure begins. A mud hole stops the bus, Ellie uses her leg to stop a passing car, and a crook tries to steal their luggage on their journey but along the way they fall in love.
