Hondo Lane (John Wayne) is a rider for the U.S. Army Cavalry. He finds Angie Lowe (Geraldine Page) and her son struggling in the unfriendly Apache Territory. She is convinced that since the Apaches under Chief Vittorio (Michael Pate) have never raided her land that she and her family are safe from attack. Hondo is smitten with her and vows to keep an eye out for them and their well-being. On a later ride, Hondo runs into the estranged husband of the woman (Leo Gordon) and in a struggle Hondo kills him, unaware that he is the husband of Angie. Hondo is captured shortly after by Vittorio and the Apaches. Risking her own life and family, Angie comes to the aid of Hondo by telling the Apache chief that Hondo is her husband. Hondo goes along with the ruse, only to realize that the truth about killing her husband and his feelings for her must come out to the chief and to Angie.
