Bernard "Bernie" Laplante (Dustin Hoffman) is a thief who finds himself at the right place at the right time, except this time, the recognition is stolen from him. An airplane crashes one fateful night and nearby is Bernie. His intentions were to steal from the crash sight but in the process, he is able to save a few of the passengers including Gale Gayley (Geena Davis), who is a TV reporter. Through all the dust and smoke, Gale never really sees the hero who saves her and the picture taken of him is all but clear. When Gale's TV Station decides to expend all means in trying to determine the identity of the man who saved Gale, they include a tempting one million dollar reward. But before Bernie could claim what would be his ticket out of poverty, John Bubber (Andy Garcia), to whom Bernie had previously told his story to, steals the limelight and claims to have saved Gale himself. Who will the people believe? The small time thief or mild-mannered Vietnam Veteran?
