The story revolves around a young Bobby Garfield (Anton Yelchin) during the summer when he was 11 years old. His mother takes in a boarder, Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) who is closely watched not only by his mother, but is wanted by the government as well. Ted takes Bobby under his wing while his mother spends her time having an affair with her boss, thinking this way she can pay off the debt owed by her dead husband. It turns out that Ted has some special powers that slowly are being given to Bobby. These powers allow Ted and Bobby to resolve conflicts with the town bully, who attacks not only Bobby but his close friends, Carol and Sully as well. Bobby's mom falsely accuses Ted of being a child molestor but doesn't realize the truth about him and her false relationship, before she betrays Ted to the government who arrive to take Ted away.
