Thomas Reilly (Robert Downey, Jr.) has a problem. When he was a boy he had four guardian angels (Charles Grodin, Kyra Sedgwick, Tom Sizemore and Alfre Woodard) who were always with him, until one day they suddenly disappeared, leaving him alone and bereft. Now as an adult, they suddenly reappear in his life, just as he’s trying to work through his problems with his fiancée, Anne (Elizabeth Shue). He discovers that when his mother was on the way to the hospital, the car she was in was involved in an accident with a bus, and that’s when she gave birth to young Tom. But there were four strangers who died on that bus, and their souls became tied to the new soul that entered the world as theirs were trying to leave. Unknown to them is that during all these years Tom was supposed to help each of them complete any unfinished business they had on earth. They discover that each soul can take over Tom’s body for a short time to assist him, and in the process of helping each soul complete its journey, Tom comes to understand his own life and his relationship with Anne.
