Sean Mercer (John Wayne) is the head of a group of trappers who capture African animals and sell them to zoos. Anna Dallas D’Allesandro (Elsa Martinelli) is a wildlife photographer who wants to accompany the trappers on their trip. Mercer is not wild about the idea, but when Dallas promises her employer, a Swiss zoo, will purchase all their captures for the season, he reluctantly agrees to take her along. On their trip, she begins adopting a number of baby elephants, eventually becoming known as Momma Tambo, mother of elephants. Over time she manages to fit in with the trappers and experience the thrill of riding in jeeps and high-speed rhino chases.
