While waiting for her husband to return from prison Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand) flashed back over her life. She had always known that she had the ability to make it on the stage if she could just get someone to notice. She auditioned for vaudeville and got a minor part. She’s still basically an unknown when she meets the sophisticated and handsome Nicky Arnstein (Omar Sharif). Over the years Fanny’s career blossomed as she’s a star for the great Flo Ziegfeld (Walter Pidgeon). She and Nick meet occasionally and become more romantically inclined. Eventually Fanny decides to give up her career for the man she loves. Fanny and Nicky get on a cruise ship. Fanny tells him that she’d like to become a “Sadie” (married lady). He says he’ll marry her if he wins his poker game. They marry and return to New York where Fanny rejoins the Follies and Nicky pursues various business ventures. They buy a big house and have a baby girl. Life should have been rosy, but Nicky’s ventures fail, and he stubbornly refuses to take money from Fanny. Instead, he gets involved in an illegal scheme which lands him in prison for embezzlement.
