Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown), an African-American teenager who lives in the Bronx, scores some of the best grades on a state wide exam. In addition he is a great basketball player. Due to these reasons he is offered a scholarship to a prestigious preparatory school in Manhattan. He is met with bad feelings of many of his fellow classmates due to the fact that even though he was truly smart, they all know the real reason he was accepted was because his basketball skills. One student that takes to him is Claire Spence (Anna Paquin), she helps Jamal through his tough times in school. Also along the way Jamal meets and befriends the reclusive writer William Forrester (Sean Connery). This friendship helps Forrester to over come his reclusive ways and Jamal to overcome the problems at school so he can focus on his true passion, writing.
