The booming town of Dodge City is run by a wealthy and corrupt cattle baron named Jeff Surrett (Bruce Cabot) who will sacrifice anything, including human life, to make an extra buck. His main opposition is a man named Wade Hatton (Errol Flynn) built on strong moral character and raised working and building the ever growing Midwestern railroad system. Hatton intends to take the position of Marshall in Dodge City and to clean up the town. His prospects are disrupted though, when he falls in love with the beautiful Abbie Irving (Olivia de Havilland), a girl whose brother Hatton gunned down years before, and also when Surrett threatens to kill Hatton and his beloved Irving if he pursues justice for the lawless town.
