Lt. Cmdr. Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) is assigned as the new captain of the Caine in the South Pacific during World War II. The crew is not happy to have a new captain, but they attempt to follow the new commander. Lt. Maryk (Van Johnson) and Lt. Keefer (Fred MacMurray) are very concerned about Queeg’s odd behaviors such as having the ship searched for stolen strawberries and leaving a convoy of ships unprotected. The two lieutenants discuss taking the command away from Queeg and finally Maryk takes over during a storm when the captain’s orders would surely sink the Caine. Once back to harbor, Maryk is put on trial for mutiny. Was Maryk right for taking away command? Could some other course have been pursued?
