Bishop Henry Broughan (David Niven) wants to build a large cathedral on a hill and must woo an embittered old woman (Gladys Cooper) for a large donation to make it possible. Praying one evening for God's help he finds it supplied from an unlikely source. Dudley (Cary Grant) appears claiming angelic status and offers to fill in for Henry's bishop duties. But ends up charming the bishop's wife (Loretta Young) instead and everyone else he comes in contact with. Leading Henry to remember the true beauty and meaning of Christmas and which things in life, like family, are really important.
