Pete Sadich (Richard Dreyfuss) is a hot-shot, dare-devil aerial fire-fighter. He and buddy, Al Yackey (John Goodman), are the best in the business. Pete’s girlfriend, Dorinda Durston (Holly Hunter) is a pilot and the radio controller in the tower. She can’t stand it that Pete takes so many risks. One day, during a heroic episode, Pete dies. Dorinda and Al are devastated. Pete, however, learns that there is an afterlife for pilots. He is to serve as a guardian angel to new pilots, giving them that “gut feeling” that keeps them alive and makes them become great pilots. He is assigned to the accident-prone Ted Baker (Brad Johnson), who wants to become an aerial fire fighter too. Learning that it has been over a year since his death, Pete follows Ted to flight school where his old friend Al is the instructor. He also finds Dorinda there and becomes jealous when Ted starts to fall for her. Now he has to learn to move on or it may hurt the person he loves the most.
