Alex Sheldon (Luke Wilson) is a blocked writer who must churn out a new novel in 30 days in order to pay back vengeful loan sharks. Emma Dinsmore (Kate Hudson) is the woman he hires to transcribe and type his manuscript as he talks. Her presence proves a challenge to Alex as she suggests changes to his manuscript at every turn. The novel, set in the 1920s, follows hapless Adam Shipley (Wilson) as he attempts romantic relationships with a variety of women (all portrayed by Hudson). Although they rub each other the wrong way at the start, Alex and Emma's relationship soon begins to mirror Alex's novel.
