It was 1836 when Colonel William Travis (Laurence Harvey) was charged with the responsibility of detaining General Santa Ana’s 7000 troops on their march into Texas so that there would be more time for General Sam Houston (Richard Boone) to recruit and train a viable Texas army. With 27 soldiers of his own, another 100 men who came in with knifeman Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark), and ex-Tennessee-senator, Davy Crockett’s (John Wayne) 30 volunteers, the small group of approximately 189 fighters holed up in a small San Antonio mission, the Alamo. Although the Alamo was promptly put under siege by the huge Mexican army, the shrewd group of men carried out various attempts to undermine Santa Ana and slow him down. When the final battle came, the Alamo was overwhelmed with the Mexican troops, and all of the fighters died.
