In order to try to get Michael Gallagher (Paul Newman) Michael Colin Gallagher to give up Mafia information, the police leak pieces of their secret investigation to reporter Megan Carter (Sally Field) who writes a story she believes is true. Instead of going to the police, Michael looks up Megan and sets the story straight. Thinking she has done Michael a terrible injustice, she writes another story based on his facts, but it ends up making things worse. Becoming personally involved with Michael, Megan keeps trying to use her profession to find the truth but gets tangled in ethical webs that trap her.
