The four sons of Katie Elder return to their Clearwater, Texas home for their mother’s funeral. John (John Wayne) is the oldest and a famous gun fighter, making the locals nervous. The other brothers, Tom (Dean Martin), Matt (Earl Holliman) and Bud (Michael Anderson) join him in trying to reclaim the family ranch that their murdered father had lost in a gambling debt the night he was killed. When the local sheriff is found shot, the Elder brothers are framed for murder by the current ranch owners, Morgan Hastings (James Gregory) and his son (Dennis Hopper). The Elders decide to seek justice in the courts, but brother Tom has other plans, leading to a climatic gunfight.
