Follow-up sequel to the 1969 movie, "True Grit". And aging U. S. Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) has been stripped of his badge and authority because of his constant drunkenness and questionable tactics with firearms. After a village in Indian Territory is overrun by a gang of violent, hardened criminals, Rooster is given a chance to redeem himself. The bandits wind up killing an elderly preacher, Rev. George Goodnight (Jon Lormer) who is the pastor at one of the villages. His spinster daughter, Eula Goodnight (Katherine Hepburn) wants to track the criminals down, and seeks out Rooster for his assistance. She makes Rooster an unwilling partner in her desire for revenge. But Rooster must use care, and put away his bad temperament and control his drunkenness, as these criminals mean business. The criminals, led by Hawk (Richard Jordan) and Breed (Anthony Zerbe) have stolen a shipment of nitroglycerine with the intent to blow up the village.
