Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) is an aging producer reduced to flirting with wealthy old ladies to eke out a living. But when he persuades his accountant Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) to hide a $2000 accounting error, a seed of an idea suddenly sprouts in Bloom’s mind. He realizes if a play fails no one expects to get their money back. Hence, if producers oversell shares in a guaranteed flop they will get to keep the extra cash without worrying about an audit. The two set out to find the worst play possible and they do. 'Springtime for Hitler' is an ode to the fallen ubermensch written by loony former Nazi Franz Liebkind (Kenneth Mars). Once they have the rights to the play they completely rewrite it and turn it into an amazingly offensive yet perky musical. To put the icing on the cake they hire swishy and untalented Roger de Bris (Christopher Hewitt) to direct, cast a wanna-be beatnik Lorenzo St. Dubois (Dick Shawn) as Hitler, find a pneumatic blonde to play Eva Braun (Renee Taylor), and proceed to sell 25,000% of the show. So what could go wrong?
