Il Postino, Italian for “The Postman”, is the story of a simple fisherman, Mario (Massimo Troisi). When Mario learns that the world-renowned Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret) is coming to live in his village, and needs a postman to deliver his vast amounts of fan mail, he rushes to attain the position. Although he is somewhat ignorant of the arts, Mario takes interest in the work of Neruda and when Mario becomes his postman, the two become friends. Later in the film, Mario meets the stunning Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta) and falls in love with her. Mario needs desperately the artistic mind of Neruda if he is to win the heart of the one he loves.
